Myopia Control
More than 40% of Americans have myopia, commonly referred to as nearsightedness, and that number is increasing at an alarming rate, especially among school-aged children. In fact, myopia is one of the biggest problems impacting children’s eyesight today. But the effects of myopia go beyond the inability to see objects clearly at a distance; worsening myopia may contribute to more severe eye health complications and sight-threatening conditions later in life, such as retinal detachments, glaucoma and cataracts. In this particular moment in time, with so many children learning virtually and spending less time outdoors, the topic of myopia management is more relevant than ever before. For almost two decades, Dr. Rappaport has been tackling the increases in myopia in his young patients with orthokeratology, which is the use of specially designed rigid contact lenses that are custom fit to each child and that have been scientifically proven to reduce the advancement of myopia. There is now a new soft lens available that has also been proven to slow down the increase in myopia in children. Dr. Rappaport will be one of the first practitioners in this region to be fitting these revolutionary lenses
